Black Desert Guild Romance: How Guildmates Became a Couple

Editorial illustration of two adventurers in fantasy armor standing side by side overlooking a vast MMORPG world at sunset, symbolizing guildmates who became a couple.

After the guild war blew over, Rilma and Kemphler didn't want to get any more caught up in the conflict between their old guild's leadership and a rival guild. They left the guild with a few companions and built a new guild called Opaque.

The two, who ran it and thought together about the new guild's direction, became a real-life married couple a few years later. Their bond began in the process of building a new community after a guild shook.

A Game Where You Grow Alone but Still Step Into a Guild

✦ Two Ways to Play Black Desert

Combat and life-skill content

Non-targeting action combat
• Chain skills while moving, with a satisfying feel to dodging or blocking enemy attacks
Life-skill content
• A wide variety of content, including fishing, trade, cooking, and taming

Black Desert is an open-world action MMORPG made by Pearl Abyss. In Korea, service began on December 17, 2014. With non-targeting combat, you chain skills while moving, and there's a satisfying feel to dodging or blocking enemy attacks.

Besides hunting while fitting out your gear, you can spend time on life-skill content like fishing, trade, cooking, and taming. Detailed character appearance customization has also long been a feature.

It isn't a game where you have to keep forming parties with other users. In the interview, Kemphler also said, "Black Desert is an MMORPG, but a large part of actual play is done alone."

On the other hand, if you take part in content where guilds move as a unit, like guild wars and node wars, you have to coordinate schedules, divide roles, and share responsibility for the results.

Rilma and Kemphler's bond deepened less in time spent hunting alone than in the process of taking on this kind of community work together.

A New Guild Rose Where the Guild War Ended

✦ How Rilma and Kemphler's Bond Deepened

In order

Around 2017
Got to know each other as officers of the same guild
After the guild war grew intense
Avoided the guild conflict and created Opaque with like-minded members
While running the new guild
Cut back on PvP and added role-play and voice chat time
Around New Year
After a long voice chat talk, realized they could trust and lean on each other
Afterward
Met in real life and became a couple, then husband and wife

The two got to know each other around 2017 while serving as officers of the same guild. One day, after a guild war grew intense, conflict continued between the old guild's leadership and a rival guild.

The two didn't want to get tangled up in the fight any further, so they left with like-minded guild members and created a guild called Opaque.

Building a new guild leaves a lot to take care of. You have to agree on which content the guild will focus its strength on, coordinate the expectations of the people who gathered, and share the responsibility of running it.

The two took on more responsibility than expected, but that also gave them more chances to see each other's judgment and personalities up close.

As they cut back a little on time spent on PvP and put more energy into role-playing activities, time spent talking over voice chat grew too.

Role-playing is a kind of play where you exchange the words and actions of the characters each of you plays and build a story inside the game, so guild members could grow closer.

Gradually, guild members also talked about things that happened in their daily lives and the problems each was dealing with, and Rilma recalled that those conversations helped relieve stress.

What changed the relationship was a long talk over voice chat around New Year. Kemphler said they realized there was someone on the other side of the screen they could trust and lean on.

Rilma, too, had only dealt with Kemphler in guild chat or character role-play, but gradually came to know deeply what Kemphler actually thought and what kind of day Kemphler had.

You Can Customize a Character, but the First Meeting Was Different

Getting close online and facing each other in real life were different matters. Both said they were nervous about how the other would react when they first met.

Kemphler was anxious but also felt relief the moment they actually faced each other, and Rilma joked, "Real life has no image filter."

In Black Desert you can freely customize your character's face and outfits, but the moment you meet outside the screen, you face each other's natural, real appearance.

And so the two guild companions met in real life, became a couple, and then husband and wife. They're users who enjoyed Black Desert in the United States. Even after getting married, the two keep playing the game together.

Kemphler also left advice for people who want to meet in real life someone they got to know online. First talk honestly about what each of you wants, and meet only after building enough trust.

The way the two grew close can't be explained by time spent together in the game alone. The time they spent sharing thoughts and daily life over voice chat and getting to know each other was decisive.

Other Bonds Started in Guilds Too

✦ Memories the Guild Couple Counted

From a community post

A story from another user, who said they met their boyfriend in a guild, was also posted in the Black Desert community. The poster said they met their partner in a guild they joined in 2018.

They built memories together by hunting sea monsters, farming at hunting grounds, and taking character screenshots. They also counted the moment of winning their first siege war, which they'd gone for to earn the 'Blood Lord' title, as a memory they shared.

They wrote that the relationship grew deep enough that after one year the boyfriend expressed a willingness to move to where the poster lived.

However, around 2021, the two felt fatigue from playing Black Desert for several years. The poster wrote that they returned to Black Desert in 2025 but the boyfriend didn't come back with them.

The two no longer meet in Black Desert, but in real life they've become people who care for each other.

✦ The Czech Couple's In-Game Wedding

2020

✔ Real-life wedding: Postponed because of COVID-19; it had been scheduled for May 30
✔ In-game event: Held May 23 at Grana Palace, with guild members as guests
✔ Celebration: GMs played a wedding march using Shai's composition feature, and a party followed the ceremony

Black Desert's operators have also arranged a wedding inside the game. A Czech couple who had to postpone their real-life wedding because of COVID-19 in 2020 asked to exchange vows in the game at least.

The two were a couple who had enjoyed the game together for a year and a half at that point. The real-life ceremony had been scheduled for May 30, and the in-game event was held a week earlier, on May 23, at Grana Palace.

Guild members attended the wedding as guests. The GMs played a wedding march using Shai's composition feature, and a celebration party followed after the ceremony.

They weren't a couple who first met in Black Desert; they were people who commemorated their real-life wedding with their friends in the game.

The scene of guild companions gathering to celebrate shows well what kind of memories relationships built in the game can turn into.

Black Desert is an old game. If you start now, there are probably so many features and varieties of content that it'll take your breath away. You'll think, 'When am I ever going to finish all this, catch up with the existing users, and play together?'

Of course you would. Existing users already have an enormous gap on me, and since MMORPGs keep accumulating that gap, I worry whether it's okay to jump in now. But don't worry, because various jump events for new users run periodically.

And the older a game is, the more existing users, rather than competing with new users, warmly welcome them and try to keep them in the game for a long time.

Even in old games like Final Fantasy XIV, there's a practice Korean players call 'sleeve-stuffing' (소매넣기) — like slipping a gift into someone's sleeve, players quietly hand items to new users wearing the sprout mark and run away, and if you start Black Desert or come back now, existing users will probably welcome you with open arms.

Who knows? You might meet your soulmate in Black Desert.

That's all for this post. See you next time.
