Lineage II Couples: Love and Clan Bonds Born in Open Beta

Illustration of a Lineage II couple adventuring together in Aden

Adventures Across Aden

Lineage II began its open beta on July 9, 2003, and went into commercial service on October 1 that same year. It's a 3D fantasy MMORPG where you pick your race and class and level up a character.

You roam the fields of Aden, hunt monsters, clear quests for experience, and collect gear so you can take on tougher hunting grounds and bosses. You'll spend some time hunting alone as you grow.

But against strong monsters and raid bosses, you need to form a party and split up roles.

The classes you can pick vary by server type and update timing. Going by the Awakening server for now, the class groups break down into eight broad roles: Knight, Warrior, Rogue, Archer, Wizard, Summoner, Healer and Enchanter.

Knights are tanks who absorb enemy attacks with shields and defensive skills, while Warriors are melee attackers who wield swords, blunt weapons and spears. Rogues dash in fast with daggers, and Archers keep their distance with bows and crossbows.

Wizards deal ranged damage with magic, and Summoners fight alongside summoned creatures. Healers can restore allies' HP and remove status effects, and Enchanters boost party members' attack, defense and more.

Within each race's class lineage, these split further into Knight branches like Paladin, Dark Avenger, Temple Knight and Shillien Knight, and Warrior branches like Gladiator and Warlord.

The October 2026 BASIC update also added Overlord: Bartz, a melee class that fights with daggers.

✦ Typical Guild vs. Lineage Clan

How loose or tight the group is

Typical MMORPG guild
• Often free to join
• Members can leave suddenly and nobody notices
Lineage clan
• Members help, protect and fight together in raids and sieges
• If you leave, the clan weakens, and it can even fall apart

The 'clan' is the organization that defines the Lineage games. It's similar to a guild in a typical MMORPG, but it's put together a bit more tightly. Take today's MMORPGs, for example.

Plenty of guilds run on 'free join,' and when members just enjoy the guild content or rewards and suddenly leave, nobody even notices. But a clan in Lineage isn't that light.

It's a tight-knit group of people who share a purpose and help each other, protect each other, and fight side by side in raids and sieges.

So if you play Lineage games for a while, the bonds with your clanmates get strong, and you'll often see people who can't quit the game because of it. In other games your character is just 'your property.'

In Lineage, though, if you leave, the clan gets weaker, and sometimes a clan collapses.

Clans share hunting tips and put parties together, of course, and in sieges over castles, several clans form alliances to attack and defend.

✦ Who Does What in a Fight

The roles that hold a party together

Tanks
Hold the front line
Attackers
Pressure the enemy
Healers and Enchanters
Back up allies' survival and fighting power

While tanks hold the front line, attackers pressure the enemy, and Healers and Enchanters back up their allies' survival and fighting power.

Raids and sieges hinge on lining up login times and drawing up a plan, so you keep meeting the same people and end up moving together while hearing their voices.

Bonds Formed in the Clan

On March 15, 2013, in a restaurant in Busan, Korea, grilled eel was cooking up nicely. At the table sat a man, his wife and their two-month-old daughter, and across from them sat an anthropology researcher who had watched this family for a long time.

While talking about a game he loved, the man described the best thing about Lineage II like this: "You're not alone." He's the person the researcher calls 'Sweet Brother' in the paper. And he and his wife were a couple who got together in Lineage II.

Sweet Brother worked alone in insurance out of a small office in downtown Busan. In the gaps between calling customers and preparing contracts, he logged into the game, hunting with his clanmates and preparing for raids.

That's where he first got to know the woman who's now his wife.

✦ From Game Friends to Couple

At first they were just game friends, but it gradually grew into romance, and as the relationship deepened they met outside the game too. After they decided to live together, his wife moved from northwestern Gyeonggi Province to Busan.

The researcher met the two in Busan in June 2012 and was invited to a meal with their young daughter the following March.

✦ Two Couples, One Clan

Online relationships that moved offline

There was another married couple in the same clan. They also first met in Lineage II, and as their online relationship deepened, they started meeting offline too.

The four of them reportedly spent every weekend going back and forth between PC cafes in Busan and Gimhae, playing together.

Two couples who met in the game's clan had become real-life friends, the kind who spend weekends together. When their login times lined up, they'd do raids or group hunts, and on days off from the game, they'd trade stories about their daily lives.

The Couple Who Married Right After the Open Beta

Right from Lineage II's early days, there were cases of people who met in the game and quickly became married couples.

The Best Family team in the 2011 Battle Tournament included a couple who first met in the 2003 open beta and got married after the open beta ended. They reportedly kept playing together after that.

There was also a gathering of couples who met in the game and got married. It was the 'Sailing to Talking Island' party held on May 28, 2011, at the yacht marina in Yeouido, Seoul.

Guests showed up with family, partners and friends, split into two teams, and boarded yachts.

On board, they took polaroid photos by team and individually and pinned them to the board at the venue. After the yacht ride, NCSOFT executive Kim Taek-heon took the stage and announced gifts for attendees who had married someone they met in the game.

About 20 couples came up on stage, and he promised each of them the Necklace of Valakas, a boss item in the game.

A Korean Game You Can Play Overseas Too
