Seal Online: Real Weddings From a Matchmaking(?) MMORPG

Cartoon-style illustration of a Seal Online couple sitting side by side on a bench with a heart floating above them

Seal Online is an unusual PC MMORPG where characters pair up as couples and the game celebrates the time they spend together.

When two characters registered as a couple sit side by side on a bench, a heart image floats up, and as their time logged in together adds up, so do their couple anniversaries.

✦ Seal Online Couple Milestones

2005 to 2007, in order

2005
A couple who played together got married in real life
2006
Two people who met in the game prepared for a wedding
2007
The 'Love Matching System' was added

Built on that feature, 2005 brought news of a couple who played together getting married in real life, and 2006 saw the story of two people who met in the game and prepared for a wedding.

In 2007, a 'Love Matching System' that finds you a compatible partner inside the game was added too.

Combo Combat in the Fairy-Tale World of Shiltz

Seal Online is a 3D MMORPG that launched in Korea in July 2003. It's set in the fantasy world of Shiltz, where humans and Bail live. Its signature is cartoon-rendered graphics, with comic-book colors and goofy character animations.

You pick a class line like Knight, Warrior, Mage or Jester, then level up by hunting monsters in the field and solving quests.

It has the MMORPG basics covered: you take a pet along on your adventures, collect gear, and team up with other players to take on dungeons.

Combat gets a lot of its feel from the combo system. While you attack, you press the A·S·D keys in a set order and timing, and your basic attacks chain into combos. It has an arcade feel, with the player chaining hits by finding the input rhythm on their own.

✦ September 2026 Update

What was added

✔ Third-tier class advancements: 16 added
✔ New dungeon: 'Elim Underground Waterway: Another', for top-level players
✔ Exclusive gear: Abyss Bone

There's a growth side too, with skills and gear tuned to each class. In September 2026, 16 third-tier class advancements were added, and the 'Elim Underground Waterway: Another' dungeon for top-level players arrived too, along with exclusive gear.

Keeping a service running for more than 20 years while still adding goals for your character isn't easy, so hats off. It tells you the fan base runs deep, too.

Eight Classes, Eight Different Combat Styles

When you create a character, you can start as a Beginner(!?) or pick one of the combat classes.

The Knight is a melee fighter who holds the front line with a shield and high defense, and the Warrior is an offense-type class that pushes enemies back with strong physical attacks and combos.

The Mage attacks from range with fire and ice magic, while the Hunter fights from a distance with a bow or a gun. The Priest supports the party with healing and buffs, and the Jester makes use of fast movement plus dagger and throwing skills.

The Craftsman fights with hammers and bombs and also gets involved in crafting and refining gear, and the Gourmet uses melee and ranged attacks along with party support skills.

Originally you started as a Beginner and changed into a combat class from there, but in 2008 a system was added that lets a Beginner become a Wanderer at level 115. Which means that in this game you can stay unemployed forever, on the Beginner branch(?).

(So jealous...)

✦ Beginner or Combat Class?

Pick the start that fits how you want to play

BeginnerMore freedom in stat distribution
For players who want to raise the character piece by piece
Combat classJump into the game quickly
Pick one of the combat classes and start there

The reason to start as a Beginner instead of a combat class right away is to make more use of the freedom in stat distribution. If you want to jump into the game quickly, pick a combat class and start there.

If you'd rather agonize over stat distribution and raise your character piece by piece, starting as a Beginner works too.

For a first-timer who wants to learn the controls and the growth flow by hunting solo, the Mage or the Hunter is generally the recommended pick.

Since both fight mainly with ranged attacks, you can hit monsters before they get close, and it's easier to settle into the hunting flow early on when you're short on gear.

If you like holding steady behind a shield, the Knight is your pick, and if you want to chain combos yourself and enjoy the impact, the Warrior fits. The Priest, who handles party healing and buffs, suits people who prefer cooperative play.

A Game(?) That Finds Your Ideal Type

The couple system is hard to leave out when describing Seal Online. Register two characters as a couple in the game and the days you spend together get recorded, and on each anniversary the game celebrates with a new character look and rewards.

✦ Anniversary Looks

What changes as the days add up

100 days
• The characters' cheeks turn rosy
500 days
• One hugs the other snugly in the sleeping pose
1,000 days
• The chair they share gets a lot fancier

The character looks that change with anniversaries are a cute sight too. At 100 days the characters' cheeks turn rosy, at 500 days one hugs the other snugly in the sleeping pose, and at 1,000 days the chair they share gets a lot fancier.

A heart image floating up when a couple sits side by side on a bench is another signature touch.

✦ Using the Love Matching System

How the 2007 feature worked

1Press the heart button
Top left of the screen
2Check the matches
A list of compatible users, based on the info and ideal-type conditions you entered beforehand
3See the odds
Shows how likely you two are to become a couple

In November 2007, the 'Love Matching System' was added. Press the heart button at the top left of the screen, and a list of compatible users would appear, based on the info about yourself and the ideal-type conditions you'd entered beforehand.

It didn't just list candidates, it also showed how likely you were to become a couple, which gave people a different way to start a relationship than talking to a stranger you happened to bump into.

They basically set up a small matchmaking window inside the game.

The couple system comes in handy when hunting together, too. For example, the 2007 update added items exclusively for couple parties. Take 'Black Knight': use it and you absorb half of the damage your partner would take.

Use 'Blind Sacrifice' and your own XP gain drops by 25%, but your partner gets 50% more.

Wedding Stories That Started in Shiltz

In November 2006, the story of a couple using the character names 'Amarantine' and 'Kororong' was introduced.

The two first met in Seal Online and grew close through the couple system, and after confirming they were a good match, they kept the relationship going and decided to marry in real life.

Kororong said they were thrilled, never expecting to find this kind of connection in a game and end up married. The game company said it would support the wedding with a wreath, 1,000 roses, and a commemorative costume with a message of the couple's choice.

'Maninolja' and 'Euhahak' are another couple who first met in the game. They got to know each other in Seal Online in 2006, grew close through the couple system, and stayed together for about three years.

✦ Two Weddings, One Week

Game first, then real life

After the ceremony
An afterparty that summoned monsters
May 31, 2009
The real-life wedding

On May 24, 2009, they held an in-game wedding in Madelin village on the Hokma server. An officiant and an MC took the stage, and other players attended as guests.

The staff prepared traditional wedding attire, and after the ceremony they ran an afterparty that summoned monsters. The real-life wedding was set for the 31st of the same month.

They held the wedding in the game first, then planned to tie the knot in real life a week later.

In 2005, 'daeohlee' and 'kukipoki' had an actual wedding. The two already knew each other from before they started the game, but they said playing Seal Online together confirmed they were a good match and let their relationship grow.

Guild members they'd played with attended, and the developer sent a wreath and a congratulatory message too. The bride fondly recalled their time playing together, saying some players in the game called them a 'lovey-dovey couple.'

A Game Served Around the World

Seal Online isn't only in Korea; it keeps regional PC services running overseas too.

Korea is handled by PLAYWITHKOREA, the global service by PLAYWITH INTERACTIVE, Latin America by PlayWith Latin America, and Thailand by Playwith Thailand, all listed as service partners.

✦ Service Status by Region

Korea, global, Thailand and Latin America

✔ Korea: October 28 update; PC client download available
✔ Global: October 28 update and promotions announced
✔ Thailand: Third-tier class advancement pre-event, November 2 to 15; November 25 update teased
✔ Latin America: Runs its own regional game page

The global site announced an October 28, 2026 update and promotions, and Thailand is holding a pre-event for the third-tier class advancement from November 2 to 15 while teasing a November 25 update. Latin America runs its own regional game page as well.

The Korean service also had an October 28 update and offers a PC client download.

Imagine marrying someone you met in a game, with the people you hunted with and spent guild time with celebrating your wedding at a real-world venue. That would be a truly special experience.

With Shiltz still getting updates, why not look for your own match there?

That's all for this post. See you next time.
