Minecraft Friends Who Met as Teens Are Now Engaged

An illustration of two blocky game characters holding hands on a grass hill at sunset, with a cat nearby

More than ten years ago, a teenage Amanda met Joey on a Minecraft server. They lived on opposite sides of the United States, more than 2,000 miles apart. They still became best friends in no time.

They sometimes stayed on Skype all night. Because of the three-hour time difference, Joey would end up awake much later than Amanda, apparently.

How their story moves forward

1Friendship turns into romance
It happens over time
2They visit each other
Many trips back and forth

Over time, the friendship turned into romance. They visited each other's places many times, and eventually Joey left Ohio and moved to Southern California, where Amanda grew up.

They live together with their cats, Motor and Macaroni, and each keeps building their own work and life.

Amanda shared this story on her blog on September 4, 2024. She wrote that being with Joey lets her be most herself and live playfully and creatively every day.

She added that Minecraft is a special game for her, and that she loves making Minecraft-themed cakes. Her blog even had photos of the cakes she'd made.

A Proposal Watched by Hundreds of Cats

On May 8, 2024, Joey proposed to Amanda at the Lāna‘i Cat Sanctuary on the Hawaiian island of Lāna‘i. Hundreds of cats were around them, and Amanda wrote that it was the proposal she'd dreamed of, so she said yes without hesitation.

Cats rescued from vulnerable habitats get their own space

The Lāna‘i Cat Sanctuary is a shelter that gives rescued cats a lifelong home. On four acres of outdoor grounds, it cares for more than 700 rescued cats, and it works to protect Hawaii's native birds too.

In particular, to keep ground-nesting birds safe from cats, it gives cats rescued from vulnerable habitats a separate place to live. Visitors can interact with the cats, but the real purpose is to give rescued animals a safe home for life.

What Kind of Game Is Minecraft? (You Probably Already Know)

Minecraft doesn't send you down a fixed quest path. It's a sandbox game where you gather and stack blocks and decide for yourself what to do.

✦ Two Ways to Play

Same world, different kind of teamwork

Survival
• Gather wood and ore
• Build tools and a house
• Watch out for night monsters and hunger
Creative
• No resource or survival pressure
• Pull out blocks and fly around
• Focus on building

In 'Survival,' you gather wood and ore to make tools and a house, and you have to handle threats like monsters at night and hunger. With friends, you can split up roles: one person gets food while another explores mines or builds the house.

In 'Creative,' you can pull out blocks with no resource or survival pressure, and fly around to focus on building. Even in the same world, the way you cooperate changes depending on the mode.

On multiplayer servers, where many people join the same world, you can explore or build together, and depending on the server's rules, enjoy roleplay and minigames too.

Every server has a pretty different vibe.

✦ Server Types, Quick Look

Same game, very different vibes

SMPSurvival Multiplayer
Survival, building and exploration with others
RoleplayTake on a role, stay in character
Merchant, adventurer, guard
MinigameShort matches played over and over

For example, SMP is short for 'Survival Multiplayer,' a server where several people do survival, building and exploration together. It's good for gathering resources, growing a house or town, and pushing long-term goals as a group.

Then there are roleplay servers, where players take on roles like merchant, adventurer or guard, and talk and act in character.

You might run a shop, hand out quests to other players, or join events in the world the server has built. (Think of a World of Warcraft RP server.)

Roleplay servers work best when people with similar tastes who share a world get together. (If they're all fans of the same universe, isn't that the best server?)

There are other kinds too, like minigame servers built around short matches played over and over. Minecraft is one game, but depending on the rules and events the server's operator sets up, the people you meet and the way you play can be completely different.

The point is, once you log in, you'll find at least one server that fits the way you like to play.

Finding Your Own Connection in Minecraft

✦ Pick a Server Type

Who each one suits

✔ Public community server: For mingling with strangers and joining shared builds and events
✔ Realms: For friends keeping a world going at their own convenient times
✔ Whitelist private server: Only accounts the operator has approved can connect

First, figure out who you want to play with and how. If you want to mingle easily with strangers or join shared builds and events, a public community server is a good fit.

Before you join, check whether regular events are held and whether newcomers can take part in projects already underway.

If you just want to keep a world going with friends, each at your own convenient time, Realms, the subscription server option, is the easy route. Players can jump in and play even when the person who created the world isn't online.

There are also privately run servers, and this 'whitelist' approach means only accounts the operator has approved can connect.

✦ Check Before You Join

Three things to look at

1Language
Does it match yours?
2Mods or modpack
Do you need to install any?
3World resets
Does the world get reset when a season ends?

Once you've picked a server, check what it takes to join. Look at whether its language matches yours and whether you need to install particular mods or a modpack.

A modpack bundles several mods so you can install them all at once, and it can add new blocks and items or even change the game's rules. If you want the things you build to last, also check whether the world gets reset when a season ends.

Rather than just picking the server with the most players, finding one that fits your play style comes first.

✦ Java Edition vs. Bedrock Edition

Agree with your friend on one

Java Edition
• Widely used for PC community servers
• Used for mod play
Bedrock Edition
• PC, console and mobile
• Recommended server list in the game

When you join with a friend, first agree on whether you're using Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. By default, the two editions can't play together on the same server.

Java is widely used for community servers and mod play on PC. Bedrock is available on console and mobile as well as PC, and it offers a recommended server list inside the game.

If friends are on different devices, it's common for everyone to use Bedrock.

Minecraft was where Amanda and Joey first got to know each other. The friendship that began there went through all-night calls and a long-distance relationship, and led to a proposal in Hawaii.

Just as a connection that began in a world made of blocks grew into living together and promising a future, you might find your own soulmate in Minecraft too. Hehe♡

That's all for this post. See you next time.
