Rust Community Wedding: Love Born in a Survival Game

A Survival Game That Starts With Rocks and Torches

Rust is an open-world survival game where you compete with other survivors on an island. You start with basic tools like a rock and a torch, then gather wood and stone, find food, and build a shelter to make it through the night.

The cold and wild animals are threats, but the ones you really need to watch out for are the other players. They might raid your base to take the resources you worked so hard for, or they might offer a trade or become an ally to live alongside.

✦ How a Rust Base Grows

From a rock and a torch to a fortress

1Gather
Wood, stone and food
2Craft and research
Tools, weapons, armor and crafting recipes
3Explore key places
Harbors and research facilities: more loot, more risk
4Upgrade the base
Electrical setups, farms and vehicles

Once you've got resources, you make tools, weapons and armor, and grow your base by researching crafting recipes.

To get better gear you have to explore key places like the harbor or research facilities, and the more loot a place has, the greater the risk of running into other survivors.

Push through those risks and get electrical setups, farms and even vehicles running, and the base that used to be just a place to sleep starts turning into a workshop or a fortress. But you can never fully relax.

You need boxes to store your gear and resources, doors and locks to keep outsiders out, and materials to keep the base running. If you run out, buildings can decay, and sometimes intruders show up with explosives and weapons.

In Rust, other players can become rivals or allies at any moment. You can talk to people nearby by voice or offer a trade, but whether they'll go along with it or attack you is something you only find out by running into them.

Servers differ in rules and vibe, too.

Some servers are all about base raiding and gunfights, while others have communities that enjoy roleplay and shared events. Rust communities get up to all sorts of things, like decorating cars for meetups or recreating music videos inside the game.

It's all stuff players create themselves, setting up the maps, vehicles and participants. The wedding I'm covering today is one case of that creative culture being used to celebrate a couple.

Two Couples Who Met in Rust

✦ Vertiigo and TankGirl: The Road to the Wedding

From a game to a proposal

The celebration
The community that played with them put one together

Vertiigo (Brendan) and TankGirl (Sarah) met in Rust and kept a long-distance relationship going online for a long time. Sarah traveled a long way to live with Brendan, and after that Brendan proposed to her.

And the community that had been playing with them put together a celebration for the happy news.

What people set up wasn't a real-life venue but a wedding inside Rust. Players who'd normally raid each other's bases or fight over resources roleplayed a wedding to celebrate one couple.

✦ Who Did What at the Wedding

The event map was made by NIN, and Bugs, who's active in Rustafied, officiated. Helk from the Rust dev team attended too, and the wedding song was handled by Mr. Wobbles, I hear.

On top of that, the event reportedly even led to a fundraising campaign for COVID-19 relief.

✦ igreggers' Story

A Reddit post from May 1, 2022

The post
“We met playing Rust five years ago, married yesterday”
The comments
A stranger he once raided became a friend, who introduced him to his wife
The C4 incident
His wife blew up the C4 in his base the first time she was invited

On May 1, 2022, a user named igreggers posted a wedding photo in Reddit's Rust community and wrote, “We met playing Rust five years ago, married yesterday.”

So they got married five years after meeting in Rust. In the comments, he explained that a stranger he'd once raided later became a friend, and that friend introduced him to his now-wife.

The first time his wife was invited to his team's base, she blew up the C4 in igreggers' base. This game lets you blow up bases with bombs, after all. That absurd incident seems to have been what brought them closer.

Can We Find Someone in Rust Too?

Rust isn't a relaxing game. Other players can attack you anytime, and while you're away from your base, someone can steal everything you stored.

Combat intensity and rules differ from server to server, and on servers that are lenient about raiding, a base you built up step by step can get taken in an instant. A teammate you trusted can turn traitor in a flash, so it's hard to ever let your guard down.

If you're going to Rust to meet someone, pick your server carefully first. Look in the server list for public community servers tagged PvE or Roleplay.

PvE servers take away the pressure of fighting other players every single moment, and on roleplay servers, towns, shops, character settings and shared events give you a reason to keep running into the same people.

✦ Server Checklist

Check these before you pick

✔ Combat and raiding: How much player combat and raiding is allowed
✔ Population: Whether people log in steadily
✔ World wipes: How often the world wipes

Since rules differ by server, first check how much player combat and raiding is allowed, whether people log in steadily, and how often the world wipes.

✦ Getting to Know Someone

Start small and keep it light

1Do small things together
Share resources, explore, help with a base
2Say hi on proximity voice
Keep it short and see if they keep talking
3Set up the next time
Pick a time, or find a public event
4Keep your base codes to yourself
Getting close is not a reason to hand over your gear

When you meet someone on a server, start with small things you can do together. Share food or materials with someone gathering nearby, explore the map together, or if a newbie is building a base, go find the resources they need.

Rust has proximity voice chat for talking to players close to you. Say a quick hello, and if they keep the conversation going, you can get close fast.

Once you find someone you click with, set a time to play together next, or look for events to join in the server community's public channels. But don't hand over base entry codes or valuable gear just because you've gotten close. You'll probably regret it.

Hehe♡

That's all for this post. See you next time.
